Paul and Carol Friesen

Paul and Carol met at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago where they were both preparing for overseas service.  Paul ,who grew up in Northern Minnesotathe son of a pastor and former missionaries to Ecuador, was powerfully impacted by the ministry of the Navigators while serving in the Army and later while attending the University of Minnesota.  Paul met many Malaysian students at the University and through these encounters sensed God’s call to Southeast Asia. Carol who grew up outside of Boston, Massachusetts, gave her life to Christ in her late 20’s. With an interest in Bible translation, she began studying with the Summer Institute of Linguistics first in North Dakota and then in Dallas and was at Moody for further Bible training.

Soon after their marriage, Paul and Carol joined the Overseas Missionary Fellowship and in 1984 with their 18 month old daughter Hannah headed to South Thailand to serve among the Muslim people there.  After five years in Thailand and the birth of daughter Jessica, they moved to East Malaysia to teach at Malaysia Evangelical College. There they trained indigenous pastors and worked to mobilize ministry to the unreached.  After the birth of their son Joshua, Paul and Carol went on study leave to attend Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, MN where they completed their M.Div degrees. Carol later completed a D.Min with a focus on spiritual formation at Fuller Seminary.

The Friesen family moved to Penang, Malaysia in 1995 to meet the educational needs of their children. Carol served on the staff of Dalat International School first as a secondary school teacher and later as the secondary school principal. Paul continued to mobilize ministry to the unreached and to encourage church planting teams in South Thailand.  In 2002, Paul and Carol began serving as Mission Co-workers with the PC(USA) still based in Penang.  In 2005, after being ordained at Hope Church in Richfield, MN, Carol accepted a call to serve as Associate Pastor of Missions and Pastoral Care at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas.   Paul continued to travel regularly to Southeast Asia with the PC(USA) and was also ordained in 2012.

Paul and Carol joined The Antioch Partners in 2012 and returned to East Malaysia for a 3 year appointment to Sabah Theological Seminary with Carol serving as Chaplain and Paul with the Asia Center for Mission.  Since then, Paul has continues his involvement making regular trips to Asia with a particular focus on Community Health Evangelism (CHE).  Carol, after completing a 9 month CPE Residency at Seton Hospital in Austin, was invited to become TAP’s Member Care Coordinator.   Now based in Austin, Paul and Carol remain passionate about participating in God’s mission in the world and encouraging the next generation of pastors and missionaries.
