Jim and Julianna Gieser
Jim and Julianna Gieser will serve with the Student Y campus ministry at the University of Cape Town (South Africa). The Student Y seeks to reach students for Christ and to nurture their growth into whole-life and life-long disciples of Jesus, doing so within the context of a post-apartheid society still marred by continuing racial injustice and deep social and economic divides.
Jim will come alongside the director, Fritz, and the Student Y staff in an organizational support and relationship-building capacity as the chief operations officer. Some of Jim’s tasks will include staff development; process management; designing a residential community program; and partnering with the director to operationalize new plans for expansion.
The Student Y recently completed a re-imagining process that resulted in an enhanced mission and vision, which will require the creation of new programs and redeveloping the Student Y property (which is adjacent to the campus). This vision calls for a more robust approach to discipleship and an active engagement with the secular university. To support this mission, the Student Y plans to transform its property into a multifaceted ministry space, including: a residence hall with residential staff; a remodeled meeting hall; a coffee shop and bookstore; and housing for visiting scholars from across Africa to visit the Y for rest, study, and community. Jim will be in involve in all aspects of this new phase of the Student Y’s ministry and expansion.
Jim grew up in Wheaton, IL, and attended Wheaton College (BA Interdisciplinary Studies and MA Theology), University of Cape Town (MPhil in Higher Education) and Indiana University (EdD in Higher Education & Student Affairs). Jim is passionate about facilitating the growth and development of others, especially students, relationship-building, process improvement/creation, and he loves to help Jesus followers seriously explore what they believe and how Jesus’s claims impact all of life. He has worked as a teacher, college admissions counselor, study abroad advisor & director of a master’s program in organizational leadership. Julianna grew up in Durham, NC and also attended Wheaton College (BA English/Secondary Education and MA Teaching), where she met Jim. They were married in 2001, and since then have lived and worked in six states and two countries, Germany (as teachers & coaches at Black Forest Academy) and South Africa (while Jim was studying and Julianna volunteered as a teacher). They love getting to know high school and college students, living cross-culturally & learning about other cultures – plus being outdoors, reading, cooking great food and exploring whatever their three boys are interested in!
